Match Report | Saturday 12th October Another away game for the ladies this weekend where the travelled down to Penzance. Penzance started strong and were quick to apply the pressure to the away team early on. St Austell held strong as a team and although not dominating the play, broke down PNZs set pieces before they became a threat with Keeper Kita remaining calm and composed on her line, clearing up anything that came her way. St Austell ladies started to turn it on later in the second half connecting the passes and being creative in their spaces. Half time 0-0. Saints came out into the second half ready to pick up where they left off, and the play really stepped up from there. Within the first 5 a strong ball from the girls holding the defence weaved its way up the the Jarman duo who stormed into the circle, C Jarmans strike was denied by the keeper but before she could recover from the save V Jarman secured the goal by scooping it into the back of the next with St Austell breaking the stalemate. Momentum on their side and St Austell were back on the press, this time L Tregunna stormed her way up the right hand side before sending the ball across the circle for V Jarman to bag her second of the game. From here, the game took a turn for the ladies in maroon. Green cards were being shown unexpectedly. Tregunna was on the side line before Bevins was following suit. Despite the odds now being against them St Austell continued to create play and force PNZ to react quickly. Y Barrott narrowly securing the third when her short corner strike clattered the post. The game played nicely into the home teams favour, when they soon found themselves clawing back the goals. The first went in after a string of short corners and the second then met the back of the net. The final minutes were drawing in and this is when it really all went wrong for the travelling team. The question being asked was “did it, or didn’t it go over the back line”, but it cost saints the game when the ball was pulled back off the base line and in to the backboard before the final whistle blew, 3-2. The first defeat of the season, with very high frustrations after the whistle blew. Not the ladies finest moment, but the saying does go.. don’t poke an angry bear. We will come back stronger next week at home.
