Match Report |
The final away game for the ladies this week as they travelled away to Plymouth Uni. The team have managed to settle over the last couple of weeks, securing draws against teams which they have previously dropped points to. The home team turned up 10 minutes before push back, resulting in a delayed start, but the away team took no time settling into the game and St Austells midfield took the unprepared uni team by surprise with strong balls in from Barrott and Ball early on allowed Moule and Crowle to hustle the keeper. The pressure didn’t stop there, and with interceptions, and constant pressure from the midfield and forwards, they were once more putting the defence on the back foot, Saints narrowly missed the opportunity to take the early lead thanks to Unis keeper keeping them in the game. A break from Uni found them awarded a short corner, their efforts paid off when they were the first to open the scoring. They began to settle into the game but Oakley holding the defence strong in the middle supported by Bevins and James were breaking down the fast paced play, frustrating the home team. Keeper N.Williams held strong on her line, with the Uni team desperately clawing for their second, Williams denied them the chance. St Austell regained the possession once more, strong play from James, Horwell and Barrott allowed Saints to gain ground, they weaved through the opposition and into the eagerly awaiting forwards who found the back board and the equaliser. Half time 1-1. The home team now settling into their play began to get creative around the pitch. St Austells defence required to defend a number of short corners on the bounce, but managed to deny any further conversions, but a quick break allowed them to take the lead shortly after. St Austell now trailing had a lot to fight for and working together to try and create further opportunities but struggled to get through to conversion. K Williams and Tregunna hustled relentlessly and caused the uni team to make some errors, but once again the St Austell team fell shy of making it count. The away team battling hard as the minutes closed in, Uni made a quick run and with tiring legs the ladies struggled to break down the play, uni securing their third and final of the game. Not the desired outcome for the ladies today, despite that there are still plenty of positives to take from their play leading into the final game of the 2023/2024 season. Team: Nikita Williams, Debbie James, Lucie Oakley, Mandy Bevins, Laura Tregunna, Miranda Ball, Yasmin Barrott, Beth Horwell, Maisie Moule, Kellie Williams, Amanda Crowle. MOM: Laura Tregunna
