Match Report |
It was St Austells turn to be hosted at Penair by Newquay 2s this week. St Austell struggling for a second week with a depleted squad, and with a hungry Newquay determined for 3 points St Austell knew they had a battle ahead. The first half started strong for the St Austell squad, despite Newquay having the occasional break, the maroon team held strong and caused havoc for the defence. Newquays keeper doing well to stop any strikes and keeping the home team in the game. A St Austell short corner reached Maisie Moule on the post, across the goal mouth to an eager Amanda Crowle who was perfectly positioned to sweep it past the unsuspecting keeper, securing her first senior goal … cue big celebrations for her. The game continued to progress heavily in St Austells favour but with them being constantly denied of scoring. A strong run from Moule was quickly stopped from a forceful tackle taking her to the ground, Newquay responding on the break, were then awarded a short corner despite Miranda Ball the next to be subject to the harsh tackling. Newquay came out a different team, physically and mentally in the second half, and equalised in the early minutes. It was their time to take possession and forced St Austell to think fast. Their constant pressure and fresh legs began taking its toll on the run ragged Saints and Newquay responded with the third. Saints not prepared to give in easily, began to gain some composure and regained possession themselves, weaving their way through the defence another heavy tackle hit the Saints team with a 3rd player taken down with only warning issued. St Austell responded soon after when they put their second in the back of the net, but with no time to ease up. Play remained in Newquay’s possession with momentum on their side, L Tregunna tracking back down the right wing won the ball but was surprised to see the first and only green card of the fixture against her. Play continued and in the closing minutes Newquay’s secured their fourth and final, awarding them the 3 points they eager to win today. |
