St Austell Ladies Vs Plymouth Marjon 3

The ladies were back at home this weekend after a half term break and they welcomed Marjon 3’s to Penair for their first encounter this season.

Saints had a depleted squad so players were required to be extra versatile in their positions.  Marjon came out strong and applied pressure straight away; St Austell on the back foot, struggled to settle into their own game and were punished by the opposition’s quick interceptions and disciplined play. Despite this, St Austell made some strong clearances in defence but an unlucky deflection took Marjon into the lead.

The Saints’ squad were persistent in trying to create attacking play. They made some positive runs to drive the ball forward but Marjon denied them from taking full advantage of the opportunities. 

A short corner was awarded to the away team and after several blocks and clearances they scooped up a rebound for their second goal on the score sheet.

Half time, 2-0.

After a half time talking to, St Austell came out hungrier for the ball. They started to find the spaces and create attacking play, working together to move forward. A short corner was awarded and Lindsay Allen stepped up for the straight strike; Marjon defence scrambled to save and clear away her fierce shot, unfortunately denying Saints the conversion.

Marjon, doing what they could to claw another goal, saw Saints’ M Ball in the sin bin  following a questionable dive into the circle from the Marjon forward; their efforts were rewarded though when they found the back board for the third and final time.

Not the best result for the St Austell ladies this week; however they fought hard and have succeeded more than they anticipated so far this season. Heads won’t drop after this loss, but as always, they will work hard and come back stronger.
