St Austell Ladies Vs Newquay 2

Saints were back at home this weekend and after a tough loss last week, the ladies had to come out and reaffirm themselves in this league.

Newquay ladies were on it from the start, with both teams battling for possession. St Austell’s mid field worked together with the forward line pushing up towards Newquay’s defences. Play had already improved from last week with St Austell flooding the circle but Newquay were holding them up with Newquay’s keeper saving some impressive strikes. 

Play changed possession and this time it was Newquay on the press with their first short corner awarded and quickly converted. 

St Austell’s heads didn’t drop though; they continued with possession, working the ball up pitch with a chase into the circle. The ball, left free, was soon collected and scooped into the bottom left corner of the goal by Holly Fraser. 

Newquay were determined to take the lead once more, but again the St Austell defence worked tirelessly to break down their play. Possession was back in the hands of the Saints and a forward push to move back up the pitch. The team effort allowed a break into the circle and a fantastic reverse strike took the home team into the lead.

Half time 2-1. 

The second half remained much the same. Newquay upped the tempo and forced St Austell to play on their back foot for a portion of the half; despite the opposition’s efforts, the Saints continued to hold their nerve and make those crucial saves and clearances.

St Austell were awarded a number of short corners throughout the second half, although without conversion success and dug deep to keep the win.

The final whistle blowing on 2-1 to Saints. 

A well battled game from both teams, with super star Poppy Marsh being awarded this weeks Mom.
