Match Report

A late afternoon pushback and a Christmas party to attend found St Austell ladies eager to get onto the pitch.

A travelling Marjon side saw the first time in a few seasons that the teams had faced each other; with Marjon sitting 4th in the league table, Saints had a lot to prove.

St Austell prepped from the first whistle, took no time to settle into the game and were defiant in their attacks.  Charlotte Jarman - making her way through the defence before opening up at the top of the circle - was first on the scoresheet, beating the back board in only the third minute. With spirits lifted, the ladies were hungry for more. Jarman, back on the break with Saints overloading the defence, found herself on the ball and unmarked, to secure her second in six minutes. Two goals and the ladies were back on the attack again! A short corner was awarded and Yasmin Barrott’s injection reached Jarman at the top of the circle; Holly Bunt confidently collected and converted the slip when she put it out of the keeper’s reach, making that her first goal in a maroon shirt.

Marjon regrouped and had some counter attacks themselves, but with keeper King back on the line, she was determined to not concede. The starting back three of Debbie James, Maisie Moule and Mandy Bevins broke down Marjon’s attacks, preventing any crucial opportunities to strike; despite these breaks, play was still heavily dominated by the St Austell ladies. Dynamic duo Miranda Ball and Barrott created plenty of forward play out of the midfield, applying constant pressure on the visitors. This time, it was Hermione Crowle who was ready; she secured the ball on the edge of the circle before taking it in on the far right and a clean hit found the ball clearing the Marjon defence once more.

Half time, 4-0

Not much to be said at half time; St Austell’s squad of 15 all wanted to keep pushing the win. They started the same as the first half; this time Yasmin Barrott in Marjon’s danger zone - her shot, narrowly going wide, was scooped up and put past the keeper by Bunt for her second. Bunt fancied a hat trick and Saints were once more on the attack. Laura Tregunna, out on the right-hand side, crossed a fierce ball across the circle and goal hungry Bunt confirmed those hat trick desires when she smashed the cross into the back board. Three still wasn’t enough for her this time though! Jarman was relentless in the middle and with Marjon struggling to slow her down, she crossed the ball from the top of the D; Bunt wouldn’t be missing this one - sneaking the ball past the defence and past the keeper once more! Lucie Oakley allowing St Austell constant fresh legs in midfield to keep the press high and the pressure on.

St Austell were relentless but there was no time to switch off. A break from Marjon saw keeper King in a 1v1; a fanatic save found itself on a St Austell foot but their opportunity to claw back the scoreline was denied by the fab five at the back. Fifty minutes in and the breaks didn’t stop there. Horwell, back in the midfield this week, made it impossible for any breaks down Marjon’s right-hand side. There were plenty of fresh legs throughout the game - Amanda Crowle holding well at the back, putting in some well-timed tackles, allowing Ball and Barrott to send the ball on through the midfield. Millie Bray, having her own opportunities to score up front, just missed out on the conversion. As the game progressed, unstoppable Jarman - fancying a hat trick of her own - was back on the break. Her pace unmatched, she smashed the ball past her keeper once more. The play was heavily in St Austell’s favour but a Marjon team wasn’t prepared to give up until the final whistle.

As the Saints built up from the midfield and onto the forwards, Kellie Williams whizzed up the right-hand side into the D; her pass clean and accurate onto Jarman, who closed in on the keeper to pop it to the side of her. Minutes later, taken off for a breather, Tregunna stepped into central midfield. Channeling Jarman from the sideline, Tregunna made her own run, closing down the Marjon defenders and clearing them as she went. A strike into the circle didn’t go as planned; however, Williams saved the ball from going out and slipped it back to Tregunna, who had a second opportunity to score. She slapped it into the corner of the goal, finishing the scoring and putting the Saints into double figures to make it a 10-0 win.

A fantastic display of hard work and teamwork from a resilient team who have finally started showing that they deserve their position in this league!
