Match Report

The first Plymouth game in a number of seasons and the ladies made it though heavy traffic just in time for the warm up.

The short warm up didn’t affect the Saints; they started off with tempo and drive, applying pressure onto the Plym Uni squad, who thought they were about to have an easy 70 minutes.

Play between the midfield found Saints on the edge of the circle before it was slotted to Charlotte Jarman for a strike; Uni’s keeper managed a touch on the ball but not enough to get away from Beth Horwell who cleared the keeper and put Saints into the lead in the early minutes.

With confidence on their side, the ladies kept the momentum going and it was Charlotte Jarman’s turn to get herself on the score sheet. She was back in her stride and pacing through the defence; securing her position in the circle, she cleared the keeper for Saints’ second within 10 minutes.

Uni had a full squad and were utilising all of their players for continuous fresh legs. Saints aimed to keep their lead, the defence working hard together and as a unit, protecting Keeper King as long as they could.  A string of short corners still didn’t see the Uni team able convert. Despite this, Uni eventually got a goal from open play. Players on both teams were warned for their stick tackles, but unfortunately Laura Tregunna was first to receive a green, and  just before half time, Jarman followed suit green, with the Uni team getting a lucky escape from seeing any themselves.

Half time 2-1.

St Austell knew Uni had the legs to keep the pressure on in the second half. Despite this, Saints still kept the counter attacks coming and narrowly missed converting a short corner. Uni soon equalised and the pressure was on for the ladies to keep the draw.

Saints worked tirelessly to keep the lead - the defence and midfield working together constantly to break down the opposition’s play but Uni had some super fans on the sidelines as a third umpire. Tregunna found herself on the sideline once more with a yellow but Uni were also finally awarded one themselves green.

The last few minutes were counting down and with the whole team behind the ball to prevent Uni from taking the win, the final whistle blew on 2-2.

Points now on the table for the ladies; a well deserved draw, showing that the hard work they have put in this season is starting to shine through .

Training will continue throughout the half term break.
