St Austell Ladies Vs Duchy1

With the sun shining for a late afternoon game, St Austell invited Duchy to Penair for their 3rd match of the season. 

St Austell always knew it would be a tough game ahead of them and with a full squad they were determined not to make it easy for Duchy. 

St Austell went out strong, starting with high tempo and powerful drive. There were many attempts with great teamwork back and forth, although Duchy’s strong defenders managed to keep the Saints out of the circle. Minutes later St Austell were awarded a short corner, which narrowly went wide of the post. Duchy responded quickly but the Saints’ marking was tight and they were determined not to let Duchy take the lead easily. Despite the game being very equal in possession, St Austell unfortunately found themselves 4-0 down at half time. 

With a positive half time talk and a refuel, Saints were raring to go in the second half. St Austell’s defenders kept the Saints in the game, denying Duchy the conversion of many short corners. Again, the possession was still very equal with lots of attacks by both teams; however, as the game progressed, Duchy were clinical -  flooding the D in what were clearly well rehearsed attacks, managing to slot 4 past the keeper to increase their lead. With 2 minutes to go St Austell were awarded the final short corner. The tension was high but despite a slick injection the shot went just wide of the post. 
As the final whistle blew on an unlucky defeat for the Saints, the ladies left the pitch with their heads held high. It was a tough but rewarding game; plenty of positives to take forward as the season continues as well as a scoreline which unfortunately doesn’t reflect the huge improvement in St Austell over the last 2 games.
