Match Report

Another week and another away game with the ladies travelling to Tavistock to face Launceston.

St Austell’s press was set on the first whistle; however, strong strikes from Maisie Moule then Charlotte Jarman were both denied by Launceston’s keeper. Despite maintaining possession, the Saints’ pace was slower than usual, enabling Launceston to make interceptions. Captain Debbie James, watching from the sideline this week, was replaced with Mandy Bevins. Bevins, Lindsay Allen and Susie James worked well together at the back, offering plenty of support to the midfield, with Bevins and James creating their own attacking opportunities throughout the game.

Laura Tregunna was first to open the scoring. Her pace couldn’t be matched down the right hand side and a strong shot from wide right was slotted into the corner of the goal, out of the keeper’s reach. The right hand side holding firm soon made Launceston’s time on the ball limited as Beth Horwell pinched the ball off of the defence, making her way into the circle, slotting her shot firmly into the corner of the goal.  The final minutes of the first half were closing in and with Jarman hungry for her first, she smashed the ball past the keeper securing Saints’ third.

Half time 3-0

Saints turned up the pace in the second half. Miranda Ball, defusing any chances for Launceston to break into the circle, calmly cleared the ball out wide. The odd chance Launceston had with an attempt on goal, experienced keeper Jacko Sanders held firm and denied Launceston of a chance to score. Horwell, continuing to channel down on the right, worked well with Tregunna. Moule, found some fantastic spaces open on the left to receive Lucie Oakley’s interceptions and made some strong challenges herself. St Austell remained in control of the game. Yasmin Barrott, weaving through the defence, was next on the score line - her flick caught in the back of the net to secure St Austell’s forth.
Soon after, Jarman was back on the attack and received a square ball from Barrott; Jarman’s speed was not matched and the keeper was cleared. St Austell had the momentum and were causing havoc for the defence and keeper with relentless attacks. With another shot on goal, the keeper’s save was smashed back towards her on Barrott’s reverse and with no time to react, the ball was back in the net. Launceston weren’t giving up though and continued to make their own creative play but St Austell - quick to react - soon regained possession. Numerous short corners were awarded, however Launceston held firm on their line. Saints’ drive continued, undeterred by this. Jarman once more clearing the defence and in a 1-1 with the keeper, slotted it past her. A further short corner was awarded, again a strong clearance from the keeper was intercepted and it finally hit the back board from Jarman’s strike.

Keeping the tempo high Kellie Williams’ fresh legs were welcomed on the left wing. Sneaking past Launceston, who were unprepared for her pace, Williams set up Jarman where her final shot smashed the back board as the final whistle blew.

A great team performance for the ladies who turned up the tempo in the second half. Great team work and communication throughout with Launceston having to defend heavily right into the final minutes.
