Match Report

The ladies made their away to Penair to play Truro 1’s for the second time. Their first encounter saw Truro steal a 5-2 win in the opening game of the season.

Both teams were playing for the win and Truro fancied another walk over. Saints were without Keeper Roxanne King following last week’s encounter on the pitch with Bodmin, leaving her with a fractured wrist. St Austell legend Jacko Saunders dusted off the pads to help the ladies out and it was a comforting sight to see the experienced keeper stood on her line.

The majority of the first half was end to end. Both teams setting the bar high and making the defence step up early. It was soon a case of who was to score first but The Saints’s efforts were rewarded when they punished Truro for a scrappy clearance from a Charlotte Jarman strike, with Beth Horwell clearing the keeper from a wide right opportunity. Truro responded immediately; their first play of the ball saw them equalise. Opportunities continued to arise for both teams - Jarman, Beth Horwell and Hermione Crowle continued to flood the circle to allow Yasmin Barrott, Susie James and Lucie Oakley the chance to carry forward. Plenty of shots were being saved by both teams and the next goal was around the corner for either of them. St Austell’s Laura Tregunna worked hard to slow Truro’s counter attacks, breaking down the play. Saints were next on the run; Truro’s defence working hard to eliminate Jarman out of the game allowed St Austell’s other threat, Barrott, to weave her way through Truro’s midfield and send a fierce ball into the circle. Truro failed to stop the incoming ball and it was Horwell who claimed it, brought it around and once again shot off of her familiar post, bagging saints their second goal.

Half time 2-1.

Truro were unimpressed with the score line, they re-grouped and re-positioned and were primed to equalise, dominating the second half. St Austell dealt with the constant pressure, not one of them being able to switch off. An ever-growing frustrated Truro hounded Saints. Lindsay Allen and Debbie James worked well together making the essential clearances down the left-hand side, enabling Garnett Scott and Chloe Tyrrell to work with Jarman to give St Austell’s defence a quick breather! Saints responded to Truro with a chance in the circle from Susie James but the shot was narrowly denied. St Austell’s forward attacks began to slow down, and The Saints were left defending their lead. With Saunders organising her defenders - Lindsay Allen, Elaine White and Debbie James, supported by Tregunna and the remaining midfield, Truro were denied that equaliser. The defence found themselves facing a number of short corners and Truro’s failure for creative play found St Austell clearing the relentless strikes or encouraging the wide shot. The opportunities continued for Truro with keeper Saunders making a number of essential saves. A fierce high shot from Truro was forced over the top bar from the experienced keeper, just before the whistle blew!

St Austell secured the win!

A fantastic display of hard work from the defence, and a growing, threatening forward line. Not forgetting, Jacko Saunders who kept the ladies in the game making those crucial saves in the final minutes.
