The ladies are back! Two hat tricks and an all-round great team performance found St Austell reaping the rewards!

St Austell travelled to Bodmin today, and like many other teams, took to the pitch without a training session and with no training time in between this match and their defeat at Truro. They had a full squad and were delighted to welcome back Yasmin Barrott.

Saints took a while to settle into the game but despite this were persistent, slowing down Bodmin’s play where they could, with the defence clearing the majority of Bodmin’s breaks.

Within minutes, Saints began building up the play and a break from midfield met the opposition’s line of defence. Lucie Oakley picked up the ball in the attacking circle and Bethany Horwell, who was primed on the post, cleared the ball past the keeper giving St Austell an early lead.

Bodmin fought back and saw themselves with a great opportunity to score but as always, Roxanne King met the ball - and in this instance the player - unfortunately sustaining an early injury. Once recovered, keeper King was back in position, clearing some fierce shots from Bodmin’s front line.

The more St Austell settled into the game, the more pressure they applied. Laura Tregunna and Charlotte Jarman made their way towards the goal; a squared ball from Tregunna was layed off onto Jarman for her to run in and shoot. The sound of the back board pushed The Saints into half time 2-0.

After half time, St Austell came out a new team. As The Saints’s confidence increased, so did the scoreline. Yasmin Barrott created plenty of opportunities out wide for Susie James and Oakley to drive forward. Horwell could taste another goal - Lindsay Allen’s strong clearance from the back was secured by Jarman, who was on the move. Her shot went wide of the post but goal hungry Horwell ran in, clearing it past the un-expecting keeper!!

Fresh legs were had on the left-hand side during both halves from Hazel Henshaw-King and Saints’s newest young player Hermione Crowle worked hard to receive the ball and create play around the circle.

Once again Saints put Bodmin on the back foot with Susie James storming into the circle; her shot was picked up by Crowle on the left post, clearing the keeper, to score her first senior goal!!

Saints continued to create havoc for Bodmin’s defence. A short corner was awarded and Barrott’s clean injection was received by Jarman but the saved shot left the ball being scrambled for. There was only one person who could finish the job - Horwell’s reverse strike securing the 5th goal for Saints and a well-deserved hat trick!

Despite St Austell’s pressure, Bodmin played some fantastic long balls down the pitch to their forwards, making Saints’s defence think on their feet. However, a well-disciplined and organised defence continued to block and clear any threats.

A few minutes later, a free hit saw Tregunna take the ball herself. She stormed her way down the pitch, picking off the opposition, then faced the keeper with a clean hit to find the corner of the goal.

Bodmin responded and found themselves with the opportunity of several short corners. Debbie James stopped the strikes early and Elaine White held strong on the post denying Bodmin using a slip to score.

A fierce St Austell pushed forward again with Barrott making ground before a long ball was received by Horwell. She passed the ball off to Jarman for what Jarman does best - clear it past the keeper! Moments later, Elaine White’s pass out from the right made its way forward to Jarman; her solo run finished the scoring off for Saints when, once again, she met the backboard, joining Horwell with a hat trick!

Final score 8-0 to St Austell!

A fantastic collaborative performance from the ladies today with teamwork and the determination to come back stronger.
