Match Report |
The rain stayed away this week when St Austell played host to CSM at Poltair. Their last encounter was a close 2-1 win for Saints, who were determined to be even stronger this time round.
CSM began with possession, using the width to pass the ball around but St Austell started strong, intercepting balls in midfield and sending them back up the pitch. Saints communicated well and made some great short passes to build the play. The team kept their shape and Miranda Ball made some great tackles, sending some lovely balls out wide for Lucie Oakley and Susie James to drive forward. Midfield worked well together to attack the ball; Laura Tregunna - working with Charlotte Jarman - driving the ball forward into the D, firing a number of shots at the goal but although they were on target, an agile CSM keeper denied Saints the lead. CSM played their 16’s out wide and a few runs were made into St Austell’s half, but the home team held a confident line of defence with Jenny Carter and Lins Allen making some solid tackles to eliminate any threat. Before long, Saints had the ball moving up the pitch again, Jarman taking on several CSM players to run the ball into the d, supported by Emily Sheila Canty on the wing. She ran it in hard but was shoved off the ball by a CSM defender, who then cleared it. Without hesitation, an unmarked S James picked up the rebound and slapped it into the corner of the goal for Saints to take the lead 1-0. As Saints continued to put the pressure on, the attacks on goal came one after another. Saints were awarded a number of short corners, injected cleanly by Tregunna, but unfortunately couldn’t make the conversion for a second goal. Undeterred, Saints continued to build from their 16’s, Zeta Penrose sending the ball up to Debbie James and Ball, moving the play forwards, where Tregunna, Oakley, S James and Jarman made some great runs and passes between each other. The half time whistle blew with Saints holding a 1-0 lead.
Both teams came out determined and re-energised in the second half. Saints had most of the possession and used the width to move the ball around confidently. CSM responded with some wide passes from their 16’s and managed to drive the ball down the wings. Tregunna, Oakley and S James chased back and Ball easily intercepted passes crossed into the middle. Lainey White, with the Saints defence and Keeper Roxanne King made some good blocks, clearing the ball out wide. Midfield met the ball and wasted no time in gaining ground to move back up the pitch and into CSMs 25, where Jarman was waiting to receive the pass and out run the opposition. She drove the ball into the D, had a great position in front of the goal and struck the ball hard. It just caught a defenders stick as it sliced though the air before it hit the net, making it 2-0. Saints continued to attack, creating more opportunities to press. Oakley received a great pass and ran the ball down to the baseline, just keeping the ball in to make a great cross into the circle. CSM’s defence battled to keep it out with Tregunna and Sophie Millington in great positions near the post but Saints eventually won the battle when S James tapped it over the line to make the score 3-0. With only 10 minutes to go, the ball hit a a Saints foot in the circle. CSM were awarded their first short corner of the game but it was enough and they took the opportunity to convert from a slip, scoring their only goal to make it 3-1. It wasn’t long before Saints responded with a long ball sent up to Jarman who out ran and dodged round a number of CSM players to enter the top of the D. She had a clear shot on goal and smashed it in with a straight strike to make the final score 4-1 to St Austell. Saints dominated the game with the majority of possession and attacking opportunities. They passed the ball well and showed determination and teamwork throughout. A well deserved win and 3 points.
