Saints faced top of the table, Caradon 3’s, at home this weekend. The ladies had their biggest defeat of the season against Caradon when playing away to them at their home ground, with Caradon dominating a 5-0 win.

Saints had a full squad and were determined not to face such a big loss again. Still carrying an injury, Charlotte Jarman was back on the pitch and the team were ready to give it everything.

As expected Caradon were organised and well drilled - their forward play strong. Saints were prepared though and quick to react, converting the play and pressing Caradon’s defence. Saints used this pressure to their advantage. Caradon defended hard, ensuring that Jarman was always man marked. Jarman’s not easy to put off; even injured they couldn’t keep her pinned down and before they could catch up, she had made her way to the circle and skilfully smashed it past Caradon’s keeper on her reverse.

Caradon replied, continuing to work the midfield. Susie James and Lucie Oakley worked hard together on the left hand side, making strong challenges. S.James continued dropping deeper to support the defence and Oakley made threatening runs up the line, creating options for Jarman. As always, St Austell’s central midfielders remained composed and organised. Miranda Ball making some superb tackles and Yasmin Emily gaining strong ground on her breaks. Despite Saints’ organisation there’s a reason why Caradon are top of the table - their hard work rewarded, when they managed to sneak an equaliser.

Saints were quick to respond, with Laura Tregunna and Beth Horwell making some great runs up the right hand side, working together to drive the ball forward. Tregunna, squaring the ball off to Horwell and into the circle, Saints were awarded a short corner thanks to a foul.

Barrott’s strong injection met Jarman at the top of the D for her to pop it back to Barrott. Barrott saw her opportunity and put the ball perfectly in between the defenders and keeper. Saints had regained the lead.

Half time 2-1.

Caradon stepped up in the second half. Their breaks and attacks were relentless and Saints’ defence had a lot of hard work to do. A string of short corners were awarded; Debbie James, Miranda Ball, Amy Simons, Lindsay Allen and super keeper Roxanne King had to constantly re-group and face hard strikes and powerful balls. Saints defenders worked hard and kept Caradon from converting the short corners.

Once again, Saints were on the counter attack with their midfield and forwards flooding Caradons 25. Barrott’s ball found Jarman, where once again her strong strike met the back board. 3-1.

Another number of short corners were awarded to Caradon where they finally got rewarded for their attacks. Despite King’s saves and an organised St Austell defence, Caradon put their second away.

Saints were on the back foot for the majority of the second half, but their determination and team work were justly rewarded as they fought their hardest to keep Caradon from equalising. St Austell’s defence had one of their harder games against one of the strongest teams; they were disciplined, organised and never shied away from a hard tackle. The midfield and foward lines worked so hard keeping the press with Jenny Carter, Chloe Tyrrell and Sophie Millington stepping up in the second half to keep the energy and fresh legs, enabling Saints to maintain the lead. A game full of energy, team spirit and determination for Saints to come away with a fantastic win. Well done ladies!
