Match Report |
The name Super Saints springs to mind after today’s thriller at Poltair Park. Two separate hat tricks and plenty of opportunities found St Austell defiant in their win.
The ladies stormed into an early lead when Yasmin Barrott found the target off of a short corner, by popping the ball through Duchy’s defence from the slip. Saints continued to dominate possession; the midfield and forward line continuously flooding the circle. Duchy couldn’t keep up and before too long Charlotte Jarmans shots were firing in; there was no chance they were going to be saved, 2 goals within 2 minutes found her next on the score sheet. Saint’s defence pushed up, applying even more pressure, to support the midfield. However, Duchy - defending hard - struggled to make it over the half way line. Sophie Millington was next to hit the back board when she snuck the ball over the goal line just as it looked to be going wide. Forward movements were relentless, with Miranda Ball sending some great long passes for Yasmin Barrott and Susie James to drive into the circle; great movement from the forward line found them plenty of space. Continuous attacks found Duchy’s keeper making some great saves, even Laura Tregunnasheader was denied from crossing the line! Before too long Jarman hit a powerful shot that was heading for the top corner; Sophie Millington saw the opportunity and didn’t shy away from the high ball - her stick found contact, just enough to get it over the keeper.
Half time 5-0.
Saint’s strength continued in the second half. Minutes in, Sophie Millington was awarded her first ever hat trick when Lucie Oakleys cross through the circle was popped in from the post. Millington knew where the goals were coming from and minutes later Barrott received a perfectly squared ball from S James - Barrott’s shot narrowly going wide but for that Millington touch. The right hand side was building up play after a sneaky Duchy attack. Lainey White pinched the ball off of the Duchy forward and even full of cold she drove it onwards to Lucie Oakley. Oakley passed it back to Tregunna to drive down the side line; her shot was saved but Oakley picked up the rebound and passed it up to Jarman at the the top of the circle for her to shoot, meaning Jarman joined Millington with a hat trick! The final minutes were closing down and Duchy found some space to move forward. Saint’s defence were eager to keep the clean sheet with Lindsay Allen and Debbie James hunting down any threats and Saints keeper, Roxanne King having a quite game. Jarman fancied one more before the final whistle blew; she took this one solo though, through the defence and one on one with the keeper, before slapping it into the corner.
An amazing display of hockey from Saints, and great spirit and determination from Duchy against a team who applied pressure until the very end.
