Match Report |
Caradon started with possession and the rain came down as soon as the first whistle blew. Their first pass was intercepted by Charlotte Jarmanwho set the pressure instantly, working her way into the circle before Caradon even had time to react. A feisty tackle saw the ball pushed away but Jarman’s quick reactions led her to go for the strike. The ball flew past the keeper as Jarman landed on the floor, the effort putting Saints in the lead within the first 30 seconds. St Austell maintained possession and kept in control of the play, making constant threats. A disallowed goal saw Saint’s frustration grow, as did Caradon’s. St Austell’s pace was hard to match as they picked their spirits up. Minutes later a strong ball was sent into the circle from Miranda Ball; Susie James picked it up and took a shot on goal. The shot was saved but James wasn’t giving up. With a strong battle through the rest of the defenders, Susie slapped the ball, lifting it into the back of the net, rewarding her with her first goal of the season! Saints kept the lead in play. Laura Tregunna and Lucie Oakley were working wonderfully out on the right, making strong runs into open spaces for Yasmin Barrott and Miranda Ball to clear out of the centre and drive forward. The next ball sent up the line was taken by Oakley. She sent a strong ball onto Sophie Millington, who held her own, then passed it on Jarman, the two of them pinging the ball between the defence. The hard work was once again rewarded when Jarman sent it home past Caradon’s keeper. Caradon began picking up, being more creative in their play but Saint’s midfield stayed tight and organised to prevent any threatening shots. Lindsay Allen held strong in defence with Debbie James, Jenny Carter and Elaine White either side of her to take on any challenges from out wide. A Caradon short corner was awarded but St Austell’s defence kept their cool and a block from Debbie James enabled Miranda Ball to clear the ball away without any threat to St Austell’s goal. Saints reacted on the break and moved forward with determination. A foul in the circle saw Saints awarded a short corner. The injection from Barrott found Jarman at the edge of the circle, a powerful hit cleared the defenders, giving Jarman her 3rd hat trick of the season! The forward line continued to hold strong; Emily Canty kept Caradon thinking - moving the ball and finding great play out wide - but before any other play could be made the half time whistle blew.
Half time 4-0.
Caradon were pulling out the stops in the second half. They sat deep in defence making it harder for St Austell to get through. Saints kept their play creative and this was rewarded by a number of short corners; however they struggled to convert from them. At times, Caradon made ground up the pitch but St Austell’s midfield worked tirelessly to slow any threats from Caradon before they could gain momentum. This, alongside Saint’s hard working defence, meant St Austell kept a clean sheet this week. Great team work and play from everyone - Well done Saints!
